KALARIPAYATTU

Kalaripayattu is the oldest form of martial arts and fighting system that originated in the Northern part of Kerala (Southern state of India) around 3000 years ago. Being so, it is also known as “The Mother of All Martial Arts”, as the other forms such as Kung Fu, Tai Chi etc, have been derived from this very martial art. Unlike modern western martial arts, Kalaripayattu is divine. This sacred art form was brought down by the Hindu God, Lord Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu. There is a whole history about this very art. Kalaripayattu is not only a form of martial art, it is a lifestyle. A lifestyle, that teaches one discipline and the very meaning of life. Being a divine art, it incorporates the Guru-Shishya (Teacher-Student) tradition, inculcates values, and teaches about respect to every living being. Ayurveda and yoga are also a part of this art. Being as deadly as it is, the Gurukkal (the teacher) has also the knowledge of the 108 ‘marmas‘ or vital points. These points can be used to cure, injure or cause death to a person.

Kalaripayattu is mainly divided into 4 stages:

Meithari – The very first stage prepares the student for stamina, flexibility, and endurance. It mainly deals with every kind of physical exercises (beginning with the basic 12), including stretching, kicking, postures and stances etc. This is basically to prepare the body, to know itself, before it could deal with another.

Kolthari – In the second stage, the student is introduced with wooden weapon, such as long stick, short stick, or double short stick etc.

Angathari – The third stage introduces the student with metal weapons, like sword and shield, daggers, first daggers, flexible sword etc. Because of the risk so involved, the student is not promoted to this stage, until and unless he/she is perfect in the previous stages, and has been an obedient student.

Verum Kayi – The last stage is all about the bare hand fights and techniques. This allows one to withstand any kind of attack, with or without a weapon. This stage includes various types of punches, locks etc and also the study of the marmas which is only taught to the student once the Guru (Teacher) has the faith on the student that he/she will not misuse this knowledge.

Kalaripayattu also includes the massage and marma treatment. Anyone can get injured during any kind of physical training. This particular art has its own mode of treatments, for bone dislocations, broken bones, muscle injuries etc.

THAI-BOXING

Similar to kick-boxing, the Thai-Boxing technique is unique due to its “Art of Eight Limbs” because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. Thai boxing (or “Muai Thai”) is a combat sport of Thailand that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This is only a part of what Dharmjeet will be training you for!
